Lightning strikes are hazards to people, animals, buildings and equipment. It can cause building fire, service break or interrupt critical operations. In India, every year, many people are killed or injured by lightning.   Geographical features and climate change are major factors influencing lightning. There are reliable systems that can minimise its harmful effects. 

Most of the buildings are connected by overhead and underground cables forming a huge power network. It will be affected by lightning. Smaller transients may also cause degradation to electronic components and disruption of system performance.

1 Direct Lightning

 First, lightning strikes directly on the building.  This causes damage to the structure of the building, building fire and severe damage to equipment.

 2 Indirect Lightning

Damage to buildings and equipment can also be caused by lightning strikes in the vicinity of a building or in trees.  A portion of the high value of electricity generated by lightning can flow through metal parts of the building 

3 Lightning on Power line 

A lightning strike on a power line causes high voltage electricity to flow through service cables to equipment.  This causes severe damage to the equipment. 

4 Remote Lightning

Severe lightning strikes within a 2 km radius of a building can cause severe damage to electronic equipment inside the building.  During a lightning strike, metal parts of buildings generate high amounts of electricity for a short period of time.  This electricity flows through the path of least resistance to earth.  Electronic devices are damaged due to this electric current.

Proper lightning protection can only be achieved by protecting buildings from 4 sources of risk.  The following are solutions. 

1 External Lightning Protection System

The function of the external Lightning Protection system is to protect buildings from direct lightning.  The air terminal is placed on the rooftop of the building and connected to Earthing System through a special conductor.  When lightning occurs, the electricity flows directly to the earth through the down conductor. It will protect the building from damage.

2 Surge Protection System

When lightning strikes on the power line, the equipment connected to the line will be damaged.  The proper solution for this issue is to install a surge protection device (SPD) at the power connection and connect it to a special maintenance–free earthing system.  

3 Equi-potential Bonding System

In order to protect the building from indirect lightning, special equipotential bonding is required with metallic structures within the building.

A professionally installed lightning protection system can protect people, buildings and equipment. Surge Protection System should be installed to protect against Over Voltage Surges from the power line. All metallic parts of the building should be bonded with a separate bonding system. 


All these require special maintenance-free earthing system. Due to this, the high amount of electricity generated during a lightning strike does not spread to the equipment but flows to the ground.
